Tawakkol Karman was born in 1979 in Yemen. She studied Commerce then taking a graduate degree in political science. Tawakkol witnessed many issues happening in Yemen that lead to wars. She is a journalist so she responded to the political instability and human rights abuses by reporting others. In 2005 she founded an organization called " Woman Journalists Without Chains" which provides media skills to journalists and fights for rights. The organization also reports abuses happening. In 2007 Tawakkol started protesting against the government. Her weekly protests continued until 2011 and she brought up the problems to the UN. She has been imprisoned for actions many times but still continues to fight for human rights. Tawakkol Karman received a Nobel Peace Prize in 2011 because of her pro-democracy and pro- human rights movement in Yemen. Tawwakol is the not only the first Yemeni woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize but also the first Arab woman to win it and the youngest.
